How To Create A Blog And Make Money? Full Guide

On this page I want to walk you through the process of how to make money blogging. It’s perfect for those who already have a blog but if you don’t I recommend you check out our guide to starting a blog (it’s step 1).

My Story Of Making Money Blogging

In 2002 I began to blog one day on impulse after seeing another blog and being fascinated by the medium. I had no idea at the time that what I was doing would ultimately lead to a complete change in my career path and end up being something I’d make a full time income from in several years later.
I had no experience or profile in the online space, no technical ability and while I had done some public speaking had done very little in the way of communicating through the written word.
I did not make any money from my first blogs for almost 18 months (I didn’t even know you could so did not try) and when I did start to try to make money from them the first income was just a few dollars a week – but gradually in time my income grew from a part time income to a full time income and then beyond.

How to make money Blogging?

I’m often asked how to make money blogging so want in this article to lay out some basic steps that I see most bloggers who make a living from blogging go through.
Here is how to make money from a blog:
  1. Set up your blog
  2. Start creating useful content
  3. Get off your blog and start finding readers
  4. Build engagement with the readers that come
  5. Start making money from the readership you have through one or more of a variety of income streams
Sounds easy doesn’t it! On some levels the process is simple – but you need to know up front that there’s a lot to each step and below I’m going to give you some pointers on each including some further reading.
Here’s how to make money from a blog.

1. Start a Blog

In order to make money blogging you’re going to need to have a blog. While this is pretty obvious it is also a stumbling block for many PreBloggers who come to the idea of blogging with little or no technical background.
If that’s you – don’t worry! It was my story too and most bloggers start out feeling a little overwhelmed by the process of starting their blog.
If you need a little help I would highly recommend you check out my article How to Start a Blog in which I run through the steps you need to take to get up and running. It’s really not as hard as you might think!
Further Reading on starting a blog:

2. Start Creating Useful Content

A blog is not a blog without content so once you’ve set your blog up you need to focus your attention upon creating useful content. What you choose to create will depend a little on the topic that you choose to write about (on that note, most successful bloggers have some focus to their blogging whether that be a niche or a demographic that they write for).
The key with creating content is to make it as useful as possible. Focus upon creating content that changes people’s lives in some way will be the type of content that people will value the most and it will help people to feel like they know, like and trust you – which is really important if you later want to make money from your blog.
Further Reading on creating content:
There are thousands of articles and podcast episodes on ProBlogger about how to create content. See our latest stuff in the content category on our blogand on the podcast. Also check out some of these popular articles on different aspects of creating content.

3. Get off your blog and start finding readers

As you create the most useful content that you possibly can it is easy to get very insular with your focus and spend most of your time looking at building your blog. Many bloggers have a ‘build it and they will come mentality’ with their blogging but this is a bit of a trap.
If you want to make money from your blog you need to not only focus upon building a great blog but it is also necessary to get off your blog and to start promoting it.
There are many ways to experiment with growing your blog’s audience that I’ve written in previous blog posts and talked about in podcasts (I’ll share some further reading and listening below) but it is important to enter into all these strategies remembering that you should not just be looking for ‘traffic’ but ‘readers’.
Start by thinking carefully about the type of reader you’d like to have read your blog. You might like to create an avatar of that reader (sometimes called a reader persona or profile) to help you work out who you’re trying to attract.
Once you know who you’re hoping to have read your blog ask yourself where that type of person might already be gathering online. Begin to list where they might be gathering:
  • Are they reading certain blogs? List the top 3
  • Are they participating in certain forums? List the top 3
  • Are they listening to podcasts? List the top 3
  • Are they engaging on certain social networks? List the top 3
  • Which accounts are they following on each of these social networks? List the top 3
Each of these places that you reader might already be gathering has opportunities to develop a presence whether that be by leaving good comments, offering to create guest posts or simply by being helpful and answering questions.
With this list of blogs, focus, podcasts, social media accounts in hand you will have some good spots to begin to hang out and create value.
The key is to build a presence, to add value, to foster relationships – not to engage in spammy practices.
Further Reading/Listening on the topic of Finding Readers for your Blog:
See our latest posts and podcasts on finding readers in the finding readers section of the podcast and here on the blog. Here are a few other links to check out on the topic:

4. Build engagement with the readers that come

With sustained focus upon creating great content and finding readers for your blog you’ll begin to notice people visiting your blog and engaging with your content.
At this point you need to switch your focus to engaging with those readers and building community.
Respond to comments, reach out to those readers personally and do everything that you can to keep them coming back again and again by building a ‘sticky blog’.
Look after the readers you already have well and you’ll find they spread the word of your blog for you and help make your blog even more widely read.
Having an engaged reader is also much easier to make money from.
Further Reading on deepening reader engagement on your blog:

5. Start making money from the readership you have through one or more of a variety of income streams

OK – the first four steps of starting a blog, creating content, finding readers and building engagement with those readers are important foundations that you really do need to get in place before you’ll be able to build long term income for your blog.
There’s no avoiding that what we’ve covered is a lot of work but if you do it well you’ll be setting yourself up well and giving yourself every chance of being able to make money from your blog.
With these foundations in place you’re now ready to start attempting to make money from your blog but you do need to be aware that just because you have set up your blog, have content and have engaged readers that the money won’t just automatically flow.
It takes continued work and experimentation to make money from your blog.
I’ve written many articles here on ProBlogger on the topic of making money blogging and will link to some suggested further reading on the topic below but let me share a few introductory words on the topic first.

There are Many Ways to Make Money Blogging

One of the biggest misconceptions that I see bloggers having about monetising blogs is that they have to do it in one of a handful of ways. The reality is that there are many ways to make money from blogs.
A few years ago I decided to sit down and list all the ways that I saw bloggers making money from their blogs and created this ‘money map’ (click to enlarge).
How to Make Money Blogging
Note: this money map was updated in September 2016.
As you’ll see there are quite a few options that bloggers have to derive income from their blogs.
Don’t worry though – while this map is quite overwhelming at a first glance there are a few main ‘clusters’ of income streams that you might want to focus upon rather than all the specific ones.

1. Advertising Income

This is where many bloggers start. In many ways this model of making money from blogs is not dissimilar to how a magazine or newspaper sells ads. As your traffic and brand grows you’ll find advertisers will be willing to pay to get exposure to your audience.
While you need decent traffic to do a direct deal with an advertisers there are ad networks (like Google AdSense) that act as a middleman and enable smaller publishers to run ads on their blogs. This is where many bloggers start (I did too).

2. Affiliate Income

A recent survey of ProBlogger readers found that affiliate promotions was the most common type of income that our readers have.
To put it most simply – affiliate income is when you link to a product that is for sale on another site (take Amazon for example) and if someone follows your link and ends up buying that product you earn a commission on that sale.
There’s more to it than that but this is another great place to start with monetising your blog as affiliate programs are easy to sign up for and if you have an engaged audience you will find they follow the recommendations that you make on products.
Further reading on affiliate income:

3. Events

While not something most bloggers do I have noticed an increase in the number of bloggers making money by running events.
These range from big conferences and events like our ProBlogger Conferencewhich hosts hundreds of bloggers every year right down to smaller meet-ups for a blogger’s readers where money is made either through charging readers to attend or by finding a sponsor for the event.
Alternatively online events or summits are getting more popular.

4. Recurring Income

Another growing category of income that I’m seeing more and more bloggers are experimenting is recurring income streams (sometimes called continuity programs or membership programs).
This is where readers pay a regular recurring amount (usually on a monthly or annual basis) for access to either premium content, a community area, some kind of service, tools, coaching (or some combination of these things).

6. Promoting a Business

Many brick and mortar businesses indirectly make money from their blogs by using their blogs to grow their profile and direct readers to their business.

7. Services

A common way that many bloggers make money is through offering services to their readers. These might be anything from coaching and consulting, to writing or copywriting, to design, training or other freelance services.

8. Products

While I started out making money from my blogs through advertising and affiliate promotions today my #1 source of income is through selling eBooks and courses on my blogs. These ‘virtual products’ take work to create but have been lucrative for me and many other bloggers.
Products can of course take many forms and income virtual information products like eBooks or courses but also other virtual products like software, reports etc.
The other type of product some bloggers sell is physical products. This is most common when the blogger has a business but sometimes bloggers also create merchandise (T-shirts etc) or other physical products to sell.

Other Income Streams

There are of course other forms of income that bloggers experiment with. Some include asking for donations, syndicating content to other sites and lastly selling their blogs.

Multiple Income Streams

Most full time bloggers make money more than one way and end up with multiple income streams.
Diversifying your income in this way not only is smart and helps you spread the risk from having all your eggs in one basket but it also speeds up the journey to going full time.
I learned this lesson the hard way after having most of my income coming from one source in the early days but after a bit of a bad experience began to diversify my income streams (read about that here) – it was one of the best things I ever did!
Today I make money from around 12 different streams.
Ways to make money bloggingThis didn’t just happen overnight though – read about how I added them one at a time here.
Update: I more recently reported on how I made money blogging in this income report.

Direct or Indirect Income?

One last little distinction in terms of income streams…. Some bloggers make money directly ‘from’ their blog while others make money indirectly ‘because’ of their blog.
Direct Income – when I started making money from my blogs it was through ‘direct’ income streams. I put AdSense ads on my blog and promoted some products on Amazon as an affiliate and the more readers I had the more income began to trickle in (it really was a trickle at first). In time as my traffic grew this income grew and I was also able to experiment with other direct forms of income such as selling advertising directly to advertisers.
Indirect Income – later on in my blogging journey opportunity has come for ‘indirect’ income streams. As my blogs and profile grew as a result of my blogging I was able to sell my services as a speaker and consultant and was offered the opportunity to author a book with the publisher Wiley. Later I was able to start an event for bloggers which also made money. None of this income came directly from the blog – but rather it came ‘because’ of my blog.
While the way that I make money blogging is a combination of direct and indirect income many bloggers focus upon one or the other.

10 Trusted Paid Survey Sites To Make Quick Cash

10 Trusted Paid Survey Sites To Make Quick Cash

Over the last few years I’ve gotten nearly 100 emails asking me what I thought of legitimate survey sites and why I’ve never listed any here.
Well, the truth is…. it’s just not my favorite way to earn extra money.
Personally, I get really bored filling out online forms and I often find with survey companies, I’m only making $7-8/hour.
But, it’s easy. If you’re interested in getting paid to take surveys at home, I’ve finally put together a list of our favorites.
It can be a little time consuming, but my recommendation is to signup for all the survey sites on this list at once. And that’s because each site is probably only going to be able to match you up with one or two paid surveys a month.
So, if you want to make any real money — you need to be a member of a LOT of panels.
I do this kind of work while I’m watching TV and if I’m able to complete all the surveys sent to me, I’m usually able to earn $250+/month.
Without further ado, here are the best survey sites…

Swagbucks Surveys1.SwagBucks

Very popular with students, thanks to a wide variety of ways to earn rewards. Exclusive signup bonus!
Who are they? Swagbucks are a reliable survey site who also offer rewards for playing games and watching videos.

Min. reward threshold: 1 SB.
Our review: We love Swagbucks, and we hear positive reviews from our readers about them too. We've found that completing surveys and polls every day provides the best return for your time, however you can also complete a much wider range of offers to bump up your earnings.
Surveys take around 10 minutes to complete, meaning you can earn around £2.40 an hour. Swagbucks also offers users the ability to complete surveys from multiple providers and give consolation points when you don't qualify for a survey.

2.Toluna

Toluna Survey Site

Test, keep products and earn vouchers.

Min. reward threshold: 500 for prizes, 80,000 for vouchers.
Our review: You won't be sent products to test all the time, but we have received a couple over the space of a few months. So it's worth signing up just to get freebies ðŸ™‚
You can also answer surveys on the site to earn yourself points which equal vouchers. Each survey takes around 15 minutes to complete, so it'll take around 4 hours overall to earn a voucher.

3.OnePoll
Exclusive £5 signup bonus.
Who are they? Best known for short, quick surveys about every topic.  OnePoll provide surveys to the press and major brands.
Rewards: Cash or PayPal payments.
Amount per survey10p – £1.
Min. reward threshold: £40.
Our review: OnePoll were one of the first survey sites around and they've always got quick and fun surveys to answer. Look out for the surveys about celebs.
Surveys take around 3 minutes so at 20p a survey (average) it'll take around 10 hours to earn £40.
You need to check your account daily for surveys and some users report you get stuck just under the £40
threshold. If this happens you can refer a friend for £4 and then withdraw your earnings.

4.Vivatic
Frequent surveys.
Who are they? Vivatic is a site that allows you to earn money from not only surveys but a number of other jobs such as writing reviews & data entry.
Rewards: Cash.
Amount per survey: ~£1-2.
Min. reward threshold: £25
Our review: Vivatic is a great survey site. Surveys take about 15 mins to complete so it could take you a little while to reach the threshold but the good news is that there's plenty more extra money making opportunities that they have so well worth a sign up.

5.MySurvey
Make £3-5 per hour.
Who are they? A popular consumer panel who are always looking for new members to participate in market research studies for rewards.
Rewards: PayPal payments, Amazon and high-street vouchers.
Amount per surveyAround 100 points.
Min. reward threshold: 345 points (£3).
Our review: Another one worth signing up for. We got lots of surveys sent from these guys, and they tend to match your profile and interests as a consumer.
The average survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, and gives you 100 points. So you could earn around £3-£5/hour.
Register below and wait for them to send you some surveys!

6.Crowdology
Interesting surveys for instant vouchers.
Who are they? A popular survey site that instantly rewards with vouchers.
Rewards: Amazon or Paypal vouchers.
Amount per survey: 40p-£10 per survey.
Min. reward threshold: £4 (or £10 for Amazon)
Our review: They work with big brands and TV shows like Pointless. Instead of offering points they just give you money for completing surveys. Surveys tend to take anything from 2 to 15 minutes to complete and it's obviously rare to see the higher paying ones.
Look out for regular prize draws with prizes such as this month’s Xbox One X, 12 months Xbox Live Gold and 12 months EA Access when you sign up and complete a survey.

7.Valued Opionions
£10 voucher per hour.
Who are they? Valued Opinions are part of a larger market research group. They send out online surveys to members whose profiles match broad demographics and requirements.

Min. reward threshold: £10.
Our review: First off, signing up with Valued Opinions automatically enters you into a prize draw for an iPad. From there, they use your profile to send you relevant surveys to complete.
The surveys are usually quite interesting, and can take anything from 10-30 minutes each, so within just one hour you could bag yourself a £10 voucher.

8.YouGov
Earn 50p per survey.
Who are they? This is a little different to others, focusing more on social issues and general interest topics. YouGov polls include topics such as politics, public affairs and commercial products. Great if you have big opinions!
Rewards: Cash and prize draws.
Amount per survey: 50p – £3.
Min. reward threshold: £50.
Our review: YouGov is one of the more interesting sites to sign up to because of the kinds of surveys they conduct. Most are on current issues that are in the news and they encourage you to express your views.
Surveys can take up to 30 minutes but are not always that frequent. We received one or two a fortnight, so it can take a few months to hit the threshold. However, you get £1 just for joining and if you get your friends to sign up too you can quickly get lots more points and cash!

9.Ipsos I-Say
Make £10+ a month.
Who are they? One of the largest (and best paying) survey-based market research companies around, working with trusted brands and research companies worldwide.
Rewards: High-street and Amazon Vouchers, plus prize draws for all members.
Amount per survey: ~£1.
Min. reward threshold: £10.
Our review: A well-trusted panel. They send you surveys every week to answer by email. The reward threshold is relatively low, and most people will be able to cash out in under 10 surveys.

10.Survey Bods
£3 upon sign up and profile completion.
Who are they? SurveyBods work with top companies that want your opinion.
Rewards: Cash, Amazon vouchers and prize draws.
Amount per survey: 50p – £3
Min. reward threshold: £15
Our review: The surveys usually take around 10 minutes and are pretty easy to complete. You have to be as honest as possible as they have a “strike system”. 3 bad surveys and you're out (we like to see it as a challenge).
They're a well trusted site that work with top brands and well worth joining through our link for a £3 bonus when signing up. Make sure you complete your profile too. Plus their site is a lot more snazzy than a lot of the others…

Different Ways To Create A Bitcoin Wallet

Different Ways To Create A Bitcoin Wallet

In order to use Bitcoin, you are going to need a Bitcoin  wallet so you can send or receive bitcoins from others.
A Bitcoin wallet is a wallet used to store and Bitcoin.
There are multiple ways to create a Bitcoin wallet each with different levels of security.
Here is ways to create a Bitcoin wallet:

1.Online Wallet
There are multiple websites you can use to create an online wallet, but we recommend BitPay

  1. Go to bitpay.com
  2. Create an account
  3. And a wallet address automatically will be generated

Here is an article about ways to spend Bitcoin.

2. Offline Wallet
You can create an offline wallet on your desktop.
But first you need to download - Bitcoin Wallet

1.When you land the page you will see number of Bitcoin wallets as shown below:         I recommend using MultiBit Hd because of its sync speed

2.Just click on the wallet which you wish to download and again click visit website.

3.In that website click on the operating system for which you like to download the wallet and click accept. The .exe file (windows) or similar file will be downloaded to your computer.

4.Like you install other software, click on the .exe file (windows) and follow the procedure to install.

5.After installation, a desktop icon will be created like one shown below.

6.You should open that file to start Multibit HD setup. Just right click and open that file.

7.Agree their terms & conditions and click next. Then select 'I want to create a new wallet' option and click next.

8.Create a password for your bitcoin wallet and remember that this is not like creating password on websites where you can recover if you forget. In case of bitcoin wallet if you forget your password all your bitcoins are gone and you cannot recover. So, be cautious and write the password on your personal diary.

9.On the next step you will be asked to create backup for your wallet. If you want backup, create a account on drop box or mentioned cloud services and specify the backup folder. This is not a mandatory one, you can skip this step without creating backup and you can create backup later anytime you feel to have.

10.In next step you have to create the wallet words. Wallet words are must while you restore your account. So, write the wallet words and date stamp in your personal diary to protect it. Click next and you will be asked to type the wallet words and the date stamp. You have to type them to create the wallet.

11.After completing all the steps a final report will be displayed as shown in the picture above. Click finish to create your wallet.

12.After clicking finish you will be asked to enter your password. Enter your password to access your wallet. The home page of the wallet will look similar to the picture shown above.

13.To get your bitcoin address, click on request payment. Your bitcoin address will be displayed near recipient as shown in the picture above.

14.You can create multiple address for various purpose in same wallet. You can label them as 'friends' 'Bitcoin mining' 'Bitcoin faucet' 'Business' etc to maintain account for each activity.

3.Paper Wallet
What is paper wallet?
A paper wallet is a document that contains copies of the public and private keys that make up a wallet. Often it will have QR codes, so that you can quickly scan them and add the keys into a software wallet to make a transaction.
The benefit of a paper wallet is that the keys are not stored digitally anywhere, and are therefore not subject to cyber-attacks or hardware failures.
The disadvantage of a paper wallet is that paper and ink can degrade, and paper is relatively fragile – its definitely worth keeping well away from fire and water for obvious reasons.
Furthermore, if you lose a paper wallet, you’ll never be able to access the bitcoins sent to its address.

Creating a paper wallet

Here is 10 step to create a paper wallet:
  1. To generate a new bitcoin address, open BitAddress.org in your browser (or LiteAddress.org for litecoin).
  2. BitAddress (but not LiteAddress) will ask you to create some randomness by either randomly typing characters into the form or moving your cursor around.
  3. You will be presented with your public and private keys and their respective QR codes. Do not scan these.
  4. Click the Paper wallet tab.
  5. Select the number of addresses to generate.
  6. If you dont wish to keep the bitcoin artwork, click the Hide art? button.
  7. Click the Generate button to create new wallets.
  8. Once the wallets are generated, click the Print button to make a hard copy.
  9. Your browser will ask you to select the printer you wish to use. In the case of Google Chrome, you may also save the page as a PDF file.
  10. Make a note of the public addresses, or scan the public address QR code in your bitcoin (or litecoin) app and start depositing funds.

For users of the Blockchain.info website, there is also a basic paper wallet option too. Click on the Import/Export option, and look for the Paper wallet link on the left-hand menu.
A much more sophisticated option for your paper wallet can be found at Bitcoinpaperwallet.com.
This website offers a tamper-resistant design of paper wallet. It is also possible to order holographic labels to demonstrate that the wallet hasn’t been tampered with. It also supplies a live-boot Ubuntu CD with paper-wallet software pre-installed.

Which wallet should I choose:
  • Both the wallets are safe. If you want basic, secure account you can go with PC wallet.
  • If you think your computer is not a safe place and wish to get more benefits like apps, 3-tier security, vault etc you can go with online wallet.
  • BitPay is just an example and there are more online wallets like BitPay. If you want to create wallet some other site you can research and join one.
  • I recommend BitPay for beginners for complete protection and eliminate risk of bitcoins being deleted from your computer (applies if you didn't create cloud back up).

Hope you created a Bitcoin wallet and waiting to receive some Bitcoin. If you want you can check out
this article about different ways to earn Bitcoins.
